ChatGPT Is Banned in Italy Over Privacy Concerns

The artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT was temporarily outlawed in Italy. This is the first documented case of a government order blocking a chatbot.

According to Italy's data protection authority, OpenAI, the California business that creates ChatGPT, improperly gathered user personal data and lacked an age-verification system to shield children from exposure to illegal content.

The first government to outlaw ChatGPT due to privacy worries in Italy. Because OpenAI chose not to make the program available there, it is not available in China, North Korea, Russia, or Iran.

The choice made by Italy is an indication of the new policy issues that ChatGPT's release has brought to the attention of advanced AI researchers. The program's ability to write essays, have natural-sounding discussions, and carry out more difficult tasks like writing computer code has astounded users, but it has also raised concerns about the dissemination of false information, the impact on employment, and wider risks to society.

This week, more than 1,000 tech industry pioneers and academics demanded a halt to the creation of the most cutting-edge A.I. systems so that safety regulations could be established. The Center for A.I. and Digital Policy has urged the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to prevent OpenAI from publishing new commercial versions of ChatGPT. This advocate organization promotes the ethical use of technology.

Regulators in Italy have ordered OpenAI to prevent access to ChatGPT for Italian internet users until the firm provides more details. Before a definitive decision about the future of the product in the nation can be made, the business has 20 days to provide the agency with relevant information and potential solutions.

Regulators noted a March 20 data leak that made some users' payment information and chats public. According to the agency, OpenAI could be fined up to 20 million euros (roughly $22 million), or 4% of its yearly global income.

OpenAI issued a statement in which it acknowledged that it had stopped ChatGPT for users in Italy and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding users' privacy.

The business stated, "We actively strive to minimize personal data because we want our A.I. to learn about the world, not about specific people when teaching our A.I. systems like ChatGPT. "We also think that regulation of AI is essential."

The robot was still unaware that it would be restricted in Italy as of 5 p.m. on Friday. ChatGPT responded, "There should be no concerns," to a question about whether it would be prohibited in Italy due to privacy concerns.

The robot declared, "I am an artificial intelligence language model that is reachable from anywhere in the world provided there is an internet link.
